Chef Cary McDowell, Executive Chef

Cary McDowell is a beloved household name in St. Louis. His talent is undeniable and his food is something you simply need more of. It’s not surprising then to learn that his 20+ year career took off in New York City while studying at the Culinary Institute of America. Under the tutelage of greats like Christian Bertrand and Andre Soltner of Lutece and Daniel Boulud of Le Cirque and Restaurant Daniel, Cary learned the craft of fine cooking.

Originally from Winchester, Tennessee, Cary eventually decided St. Louis was as far north as he needed to go to make his mark. And that he did with the celebrated openings of The Crossing, LiLuma and Revival and the oversight of Wolfgang Puck’s Midwest operations. For over a decade now Cary has played an integral role in shaping and elevating the culinary landscape of St. Louis and the Midwest. His mastery of traditional French cooking techniques, intuitive understanding of flavor and texture and deep rooted respect for ingredients and the seasons have drawn legions of fans. When Cary is in the kitchen – people come – period.

Cary joined Winslow’s Home in 2009 and in his mind he has come full circle. A second homecoming of sorts, Winslow’ Home is all about what he grew up learning and loving. In Tennessee, Cary spent most of his time as a young boy at his grandfather’s retail shop and his grandmothers’ homes. It was during those early years that Cary learned about community, customer service, how to cook, garden and even iron. These basic values are at the very core of what Cary and Winslow’s Home stand for. While Cary appreciates the bright lights and big cities of his past, he loves cooking dishes that are uncomplicated and recognizable. And that’s what you’ll find on the menu at Winslow’s Home.
Cary and owner, Ann Sheehan Lipton, are like-minded in almost every way when it comes to food. They share a farm-to-table philosophy that allows Cary to cook with freshly harvested ingredients and create new recipes weekly. Cary and his culinary team handcraft every dish with timeless techniques, years of experience, impeccable ingredients and a whole lot of love. Stop in often to discover your favorite.
