Small acre farming is at once fascinating and infuriating. Follow our journey throughout the 2016 growing season on Winslow's Farm.
Winslows Farm Growing field - arial view
Movable High Tunnel + garlic. The high tunnel is on a track that moves over 3 sections. The covered section protects a crop of greens, carrots and tender perennials throughout the winter, extending the season. In the foreground are garlic shoots, mulched in with straw.
Angus cattle and calves a few days old. A new addition to the farm last fall, 10 pregnant heifers were introduced so that we could better understand the challenges of raising beef cattle. The calves are born in the field with no assistance. The calf is walking within an hour, grazing and nursing shortly thereafter. The heifer is back on her feet quickly, and eats the placenta shortly thereafter.
Annual crops are started from organic seed. Varieties that require warmer soils and longer days are started in February, other crops are direct sown on the field.
